Park Street during the evening peak.
JULY 2018
Action proposed by WSKRA
Residents have raised concerns about traffic congestion during the evening peak. This led to a public meeting called by WSKRA on 30 April 2018 to discuss those concerns and the failure of authorities to respond to them.
About 60 residents spoke about the impact of increasing congestion on our streets that were never designed to cope with more than local traffic. Issues raised included dangers to pedestrians and cyclists, aggressive and reckless driving, delays to residents and trams.
As a result, the Association called upon the City of Port Phillip (CoPP) to better protect West St Kilda residents. We proposed a trial of changes to improve the safety of residents, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while also facilitating the movement of trams during evening peak times.
The trial will ban entry into Beaconsfield Parade from St Kilda West (Fraser, Cowderoy and Mary Streets) during the evening peak.
In anticipation of the impact of this change, the trial will:
- Monitor traffic flow into Beaconsfield Parade from Middle Park (Kerferd Road; and Mills, Wright, McGregor, Armstrong, Nimmo, Harold and Langridge Streets)
- Consider entry into Beaconsfield Parade only from Kerferd Road and Mills Street
- Facilitate traffic flow into Beaconsfield Parade and southbound traffic flow via Jacka Boulevard, and
- Monitor and facilitate southbound traffic flow via Canterbury Road.
Since the 30 April meeting, we’ve met with several Councillors, Council traffic representatives and VicRoads. West St Kilda traffic congestion was on the agenda at the CoPP meetings on 16 May and 20 June. WSKRA spoke at both meetings.
