The existing pier is reaching its use-by date. Parks Victoria is delivering a new design for St Kilda Pier & Work is expected to commence in 2020
The Victorian Government announced on 24 May 2019 that it would spend $50.3 million to build a new St Kilda Pier. Feedback had been received from community consultation on different pier designs. Parks Victoria subsequently submitted proposals to the Government.
The new pier is to create a curved breakwater which will provide improved protection for the swimming area and also for the fairy penguin colony – now said to number about 1,400 in about 312 nests. There is to be a new penguin-viewing area, tiered-seating and, of course, the old kiosk will be retained.
