On 26 November 2019 the Fitzroy Street Reference Group unanimously endorsed the Fitzroy Street Place Plan. This document reflects the discussions, ideas and aspirations of the Fitzroy Street community.
It has been prepared over 12 months in discussion with all members of our community who have a deep understanding of this place, the residents, businesses, property owners, welfare organisations and our school community.
We are so excited for our community to continue collaborating with us and can’t wait to see these projects and initiatives in the Place Plan come to life, for the benefit of our entire community
This will be reviewed every six months and we will shortly provide a synthesised ‘one-pager’ as a snapshot of this Plan.
– The Fitzroy St Placemaking Reference Group
MAY 2019
Less than a year ago, Port Phillip Council embarked on a new strategy to revive the fortunes of Fitzroy Street. Placemaking involves:
- ongoing, detailed community consultation, identifying & implementing short-term, doable remedial measures,
- simultaneously creating a big-picture of where we want to get to, and
- devising the steps to get there.
WSKRA has been involved in three rounds of consultations with other City of Port Phillip residents to discuss needs and aspirations. Visions for three distinct sections of Fitzroy Street were developed. The three areas were named:
- Beach End
- Culture and Pride
- Park End
In Session 3, Renew Australia outlined details of how they can contribute to this vision. A lecturer from Melbourne University spoke about how his architecture students are currently working on projects showing how empty commercial spaces could be redeveloped.
It was also announced that a Place Reference Group will be formed by direct invitation. This group will be representative of the St Kilda community as a whole, with delegates from CoPP Ward Councillors, the Fitzroy Street Traders Association, Fitzroy St residents, community groups within the surrounding area, property owners and service providers, as well as representatives from Police, the Pride Centre and a person who has lived through the experience of homelessness in the area.
