open public spaces make great venues for music & arts festivals and sports events, but council and events sponsors and organisers have to do better to reduce the time to put up and put away temporary equipment and facilities as well as reduce impacts on trees, grass lawns and gravel walkways
The issue with Outdoor events

The City of Port Phillip gives permits to a range of organisations for various social, cultural and sports events from music festivals, fun runs, parades & other public gatherings: – The St Kilda Festival, The Midsumma Pride March, The Pleasure Garden Music & Arts Festival, The 2XU Triathlon Series, Oktoberfest, and Listen Out Music Festival to name a few. Fitzroy Street, Catani Gardens and West Beach are often used as venues for these events.
Some residents have been disturbed by some events – fencing off of Catani Gardens & West Beach for extended periods; road closures on the day of the event and the gridlock & mayhem that follow at night; relentless, pulsating bass on the day of the event until 10pm; and foul behaviour on our streets well into the night!

St Kilda Festival is Australia’s biggest FREE music & arts festival

St Kilda was officially declared Victoria’s first Live Music Precinct on 23 June 2023.
This declaration followed the endorsement of the draft St Kilda Live Music Precinct Policy by the City of Port Phillip Council. The policy was developed in response to feedback from the community, aiming to support and enhance the live music scene in St Kilda.
